There was also a good range of other crafters there too so the quality was there and a decent number of folk came in.
However, I've realised that craft fairs just don't seem to be the place for me to try and sell my hand-crafted stuff. as people are keeping a tight check on spending their money. I fully understand as I'm one of those broke people too, but it does get pretty disheartening after a while doing all the hard work and then getting nice comments but no sales.
I think I'm also making a rod for my own back in trying to sell handwoven. Even though the bags were made on my wee Knitter's Loom, there's still time, skill, designing, and all that stuff that goes into it and it just doesn't seem to be fully appreciated, as the great history of weaving in this country has been completely forgotten about.
Sorry for the rant, and I do love craft fairs and I know that people do buy great stuff, and there are great things at craft fairs, but I've just reached my peak with them and really need to try and figure out other ways that might work for me.
So, I'm turning back to the interwebz and stocked up my etsy and folksy shops with the bags.
Here's a couple of pics of their shiny-ness for fun.

On the plus side, now that they're done and out the way, I can crack on with the Christmas knitting and spinning which is feeling fun for once this year.

Myths and Legends

Well, for once in my little life I've been a bit productive. It's got something to do with that Christmas thing as I said I'd do some bags for a craft fair in November, and as usual left everything to the last minute. The bag bodies are done, just the straps and sewing up to do. But it's let me dress the loom in a fun way.

Not all of the fabric there is being turned into bags, it's just all patiently waiting for the sewing machine to sort them out.
I've also been trying to sort out a book of patterns for the Christmas decorations that I've been doing for the past couple of years. I'm nearly there with it, just need to type it up and do photos. I've found it fun actually going through the process of designing and writing them up. It's quite a mind switch to make sure that you're getting it right so someone else can read and understand it.
Of course, I've also been doing distraction projects, like a Star Wars hat for Thom. It seems to have the power of the force in it as it keeps sending him to sleep in the car.

Unfortunately, I've not had much time to spend with snowflake the wheel. However, I had the opportunity to yesterday at the Myths and Legends festival in Greenock.
I was there with the new Clyde Guild of Weavers, Spinners, and Dyers, which I am a very happy part of. I took my little Knitters Loom with me, but seeing how it was a cold wet November day I turned to spinning to help keep me warm. Here's some pics from the day:

Look, it really was outdoors

Jane taking a break from her spinning, and Anne and Rosamund hard at work

Innes showing keen visitors what to do.

It was a really fun day and the boys came up to watch the brilliant fireworks display, and Phoenix dancing thing, in the evening. Think we need to figure out how to stay warm though if we do it again next year. Cold hands and damp fleece are not a good mix.

spinny spin

Long time no blog so time for a quick catch-up.
Life has been getting far too much in the way of late and I've been trying to grab back some yarn-time but not with much luck.
I have now started going to the fab knit nights and Spin Saturdays at Once A Sheep in Gourock, which has helped to preserve my sanity but not necessarily my bank balance.
I've been accruing a few more fleeces over the summer and very slowly starting to attempt to sort them out.

Kermit on Quality Control

Needs a wash

Jacob

Shetland
God knows what I'm going to do with them all as I've got some Jacob and more Shetland, plus some random carded batts of unknown origin. Never say no to free wool.
I'm not sure if it's a usual thing but all the fleeces have a fair whack of scurf (yucky sheep dandruff). I'm thinking this maybe a result to the very dry weather we had for the first half of this year and the poor sheepies just didn't get enough fluid onto their skin and dried out. Pain in the neck for both sheepies and me as it's a pig to get out. But I'm developing a technique of just hacking at the scurfy bits with scissors and it seems to be doing the trick.
I'm sure the sense of achievement will be great once I've got all this sorted and spun, but at the moment it's quite a Munro mountain challenge.
On the project front, I've got a couple of cushions woven that took far too long to do but they're done. And I've got several stuff on the go, but bursting to do other things so never really getting anything finished. I'm sure it'll happen soon.
I have finally got my first proper looking yarn things done on the wheel though and they look like this:

The first one is spun from hand-dyed merino by Freyalyn and is turned into a cool yellow purpley aran madness. The second is hand-dyed fibre by Old Maiden Aunt and is near lace-weight and a tad overtwisted, but sure it could be turned into a shawly thing. Spinning is fun, but I think I do still have a long way to go.
Apart from that, been enjoying taking the dogs for a walk up the hill at the back of the house. Does make me appreciate how fab it is to live here as the fews are stunning.

Sheep in a box

To say this month has been mildly chaotic would be putting it lightly, but finally the bit I'd been really waiting for happened - Woolfest!
Ok, so I've already done Wonder Wool this year, but you can't blame a girl for being desperate to get to another fibre thing. It was all the more exciting because I've got a new to me spinning wheel.
I think I might have Never Say Never on my epitaph as I can be quoted as saying that I'll never bother getting a spinning wheel as there's no real need for me. Then I discovered Collapse Weave and how overtwisted yarns play a big part and my brain started thinking, hmmmm. So I sold my Kromski Loom and bought a second hand Louet S-10 wheel.

It's great fun spinning and I managed to turn a 100g of tops into this stuff.

Yes, it's slubby but I did it so I don't care.
So, this changed my shopping ideas too for Woolfest as I needed to get me some more fibre. I also had to pick up my new to me weaving bench, which means I am finally set-up for proper floor loom weaving, just need to get on with it.
On the day I did the road-trip with Helen and Lilith. They were then very good at helping me find some other things to buy as well.

I wasn't going to buy any books but I had to get the weaving bible by Maguerite Porter Davison as it had lots of interesting patterns in it and will help me with designing stuff, I hope.
The fibre was from Freyalyn and FeltstudioUK. I feel more purchases are likely from these guys in the future as there stuff is lovely and the colours are gorgeous.
I also on the way out succombed to 2 fleeces (yet another never say never moment).

Here they are washed and drying on our log stack for the winter. They're both Shetland of different colours and they feel lovely already. I'm going to try weaving with the locks as they are, and you never know, I might even spin some.
Apologies to anyone that I may have taken out with carrying the bench and 2 bags of fleece, and thanks to Lilith and Helen for helping me lug it all to the car.
And finally, if you're wondering why a sheep in the box, well it was the cutest thing at Woolfest this year. it's an Ouessant lamb and so cute that it nearly came home as well.

Lego Bobbin Winder

I can't believe I forgot to mention my amazing creation.
After wrestling over the thought of whether to buy a bobbin winder (I'm Scottish so the thought of forking out nearly £50 for a wheel that turns something doesn't sit easy) I came to a realisation in the shower that maybe I could make one.
So off down to my brother and I's (now the small child's) Lego set and started digging. After a bit of tweaking I came up with this.

I used a couple of basic Lego Technic cogs and then stabilised them in a Lego wall. The pirn is then held in place with the winding rod stuck through the small cog and then another rod is placed in the other end and secured by a mini Lego wall.
It works surprisingly well and I've been able to wind about bobbins on it with good tension. Again, it's another piece of weaving that I'm getting used to as I overloaded the bobbins at the beginning, but I'm getting the knack with it now.
It just goes to show that Lego can be the answer to practical problems.
The hardest bit was trying to convince the small child that I was not stealing his Lego and that it was actually mine and his Uncles in the first place:)

Summer is here!

Where did May go?
It's all been a bit of a blur since going down to Wales for Wonder Wool. After severe car trauma we made it to North Wales and I met up with Helen on the Saturday for a thorough going over all the stalls. Below are my goodies that I bought.

These are Sari yarn packs from The Threshing Barn. I'm trying to stop buying one skeins, but I've been waiting ages to get some Sari Yarn and they were in cute kits and couldn't resist.

This was a pure indulgence. Mmmmmalabrigo yarn for me me me. Small child thing has been borrowing my winter hat and it's about time I made me a new one. Think the colours are just about mad enough for me.

This roving and yarn was from FreyaLyn Yarns. The yarn is handpspun and hand-dyed, if I remember correctly and I'm a sucker for anything vaguely orangey sunny colours. The roving is still growing one me as to what do I do with it, but the colours were cool so had to be bought.

Here are some fab new Glimakra closed bottom shuttles which have made a huge impact on my weaving. So much easier to use, although haven't used the rug one yet. The wooden square loom has been interesting and i'm playing with some Colinette Tagliatelli yarn with is at the mo and it seems to be making something, not sure what, but I'll take something for now.

I needed another lighter spindle so came across this cute wee one and brought that home.

I also found some SchoppelWolle ZauberBall which I've been wanting to get for ages. I was thinking of making something for my new niece, but it's fuzzier than I thought it was going to be, so it's being turned into shawls for me. The hardship I must endure.

Finally, random buy of the day was this Banana Yarn. It was only £3 a skein and interesting. I'm thinking bowls or something at some point with this.

So, as you can tell, I had some fun at Wonder Wool with Helen and it was a top day out.

The big project of the month has been making a baby blanket for my new baby niece. I'm still trying to get used the differences in weaving on my big loom as it takes a lot more care in set-up to get the right sett for weaving, and the right threads organised.
Eventually I got there in the end and made this.

I used Patons 4-ply cotton for weft and used a diamond twill pattern from Anne Dixon Handweavers Pattern Directory with various different yarns that I had lurking in the stash.
There was a bit of bodging on this as trying to get the right sett was a nightmare, which is why I used DK and Aran weight yarns for the weft. However, it worked out in the end and the differences in the yarns works really well with the pattern. It was smaller than I wanted it to be but my brother and his wife are delighted with it, which is all that matters.

The plan for now is to finally get all 10 shafts and treadles set up on the loom as I've finally got all the bits to do this. Then I'm going to crack on with some cushions and blankets.
On another yarn shopping trip I bought some gorgeous Aran yarn by JC Rennie from Di Gilpin. The colourways for this yarn are fab and I can't wait to start playing with them and see how they weave:)

I've done some knitting

Yep, I've actually managed to finish a few things. Shock horror.
First, I got a proper shawl/scarfy thing done:

It's Aestlight by Gudrun Johnston and I've been stalking it for a while. I didn't do the pointy bits at the edges as it didn't need them. I'm liking wearing these scarfy things now and it's nice to keep my neck warm.
I also finished the monster that was the husbands Christmas jumper:

This really did become a monster as I winged it using a top-down raglan construction, which is fine, but my gauge was way out on the body. Think both me and the husband could fit in it, very cosy but not too practical. I liked the cable pattern on the front, but not sure I'd knit something like this using the same yarn as it's so heavy. It's finished though and he's happy so all is good.
What I'm trying to build myself up to do know is tie-up Vicky the Loom as I've finally been able to get more Texsolv cord. Hurrah! At last I can finally do twills and fancy patterns. The only problem has been I've not had a chance to get near the loom due to the Easter holidays. Hopefully I can sort it out in the next couple of days before I go to Wonder Wool in Wales.
I'm so excited about going to Wales and Wonder Wool. This year I'm going with fellow yarnaholic Helen and I've got a feeling it could be expensive as have more of an idea what I want this year compared to last year.
The other exciting thing about going to Wales is that we're going to be camping in our very swish new tent. Fingers crossed the tent will be warmer than our old one, so hopefully no knitting wearing gloves.
Finally, if you were wondering what had happened to my Gytha project and all that lovely hand dyed stuff I did a while back. Well, I started it, and I hate to say it, I don't think I can bring myself to do it. The rows are insanely long and I've just lost heart with it all. Have no fear though, as it's probably going to be turned into something else rather quickly. Watch this space for details.
Right, I really should go and look at that Texsolv and get that loom tied up:)

Vicky the Viking

Ok, so the idea of posting more this year did fly out the window, but I'll try harder honest.
February was pretty much a write off due to some bug or other. Then March came, and thanks to my lovely bank overdraft (it'll be paid soon honest), I was able to pick up a Norwegian Countermarche Floor Loom that I found on the Loom Exchange. It had been well-loved by it's previous owner and I had a lovely time picking it up and meeting her, her daughter and her husband. A quick tip though if you're going to pick up a floor loom and put the sides on your roofbars of your car. Get lots of tie grips, like the ones used in cop shows for cuffing people, and tie the thing down lots. Then use bungee cords for extra safety. This worked on the 4 hour journey back home and it barely shifted at all.
So enough waffle and here's some gratuitous loom shots.
bits of warping mill

lots of bits of loom (ignore the clutter please)

and as if by magic it makes this

oh, and this is the rather small warping mill that came with it

So, the details, it's a 120cm 10 shaft 10 treadle Norwegian Countermarche Loom. And I lurve it. Ok, so it took 5 days to get it set-up and figure out how to connect the treadles to the lamms and the shafts.
And I did the Victorian method of trying to get the small child to help, but he got distracted by the doll's house next to the loom.

Look, pretty yarn shots:

And the best shot of all, lamms at the right position:

I got there in the end and I was able to weave this:

Ain't it cool!
It's a load of cotton that I bought thinking I can turn this into a blanket one day and here it is. I'm actually going to turn it into a cushion for a loom bench that I really need to get as soon as possible.
Look at the stripes though, they're nearly straight, something I could never quite get right on my rigid heddles.
The thing I found hard though was getting a good shed and throwing the shuttle. These go hand in hand and I need to get the shafts properly tied up with texsolv and not the shonky way I've done it. Then the shed should be good enough to easily throw the shuttle.
My edges are also fairly bad, but again I know that'll come with practice and I will use a temple of some sort next time.
I'm just bursting with ideas now and can't wait to crack on. I need to wait though as I want to sort the loom out properly so need to wait to get a truck load of texsolv cord and heddles.
I've got a floor loom though and I'm so happy.
And as a result of getting the loom I have an extra bonus that I have a proper studio (with the usual clutter which goes with our house). All my yarn is out on display and I've got a great work table. So there's nothing stopping me from creating lots of cool stuff. Well, there's the rest of the residents of the house, but I will get there in the end.

Shiny yarn

Project Gytha is coming on now for my Ravelympics entry for Team Ooh Shiny. It's just great fun and brings out the science geek in me as it is just like doing chemistry and even darkroom photography at school.
So I can now start on my jumper the minute the Winter Olympics starts. Ok, so it might be a bit later as I'm not in the mood staying up to 2am to cast on.
Apart from that, the Weavemaster Loom has now gone to a new home where hopefully it gets the love I've not got the time for. I'm now reduced to waiting for money to come through to get me new shiny ashford table loom. hope it's soon as my chronic impatience is really struggling.
That's about all for now:)

It's a new year....

....And so much stuff to be cracking on with.
Quick catch up on the craft stuff from the end of last year.
I made this cute cushion:

Gotta love sheep. Made it on my Kromski Loom and fairly happy how it turned out, but think I'll use a different weft if I do another one.

I bought a wreck of a loom:

This is probably going to be donated to a good friend as I just don't have the time to fix it, but it has got me hankering madly for an Ashford 8 harness loom. Just need to find the large amount of cash for it.

And just before Christmas I did a dyeing workshop at Old Maiden Aunt with the poor person I'm going to try and off-load the loom wreck too:)

It was great fun and well happy with the colours everything turned out. What I'm going to do with it I don't know, but I'm having fun cuddling it just now.

Last year was just too busy and I've decided to not do craft fairs for a while and just relax a bit and knit and weave stuff for me and the boys. So, first project is a jumper for the long suffering husband to keep him warm. It's romping along nice and fast, hurrah for chunky wool. I just keep getting bored very quickly with it, and getting easily distracted by other things.

Like, Ravelympics 2010. If you've not heard of this it involves completely as many projects as you want during the time of the Winter Olympics. I love a challenge so I thought why not try and attempt to do a jumper for me in the round with lots of colour work, enter Gytha. Easy! Well not really. But I love it and want it and it must be mine, oh yes it must,
So, after much angst and putting off diving into the stash to asses what wool to use I finally did it and my stash came up trumps. I had enough of Aran in grey New Lanark yarn, and then I found more Aran to do the colour work in that I completely forgot I'd bought last year at the Ravelry day in Coventry. So I now feel really justified for buying random balls of yarn.
Here's the yarn and a pic of the jumper:

Now, you'll notice that the jumper is in a lovely bluey colour. Which I love. And that all that grey yarn is blue not grey. Ummm. So with my new found confidence (ha ha) in dyeing I cleared the shelves in Morrisons of blue and green dye and some pickling vinegar.

For some reason in Largs you can't get clear vinegar. Weird. And what's even weirder is that the woman at the till didn't bat an eyelid that I was buying 15 bottles of food colouring. It's a strange place.
The next task is to dye all that grey. Eek. And get it into skeins. Ho hum.
But to aid in the production of shiny new lovely jumper I had to buy these.

They're the new Knit Pro Spectra and they're soooo pretty. There's even an orange, what more could you want for in knitting needles.
They will most definitely help my knitting and you never know, I might even get round to doing some proper shawls with them too. Yay!
So that's about it for know.
Will post with how the dyeing goes soon:)

refreshing holidays

The summer holidays are nearly over here at knit 1 girl 1 HQ, and can't believe how fast they've gone. Had a great week last week with the boys doing lots of day trips, including a fantastic day on Arran on Friday. It's great living here on the West Coast as we've got lovely islands to explore right on our doorstep.
Before we went, I had another craft fair in Troon and managed to get the above finished.
I'm so happy that I've finally managed to make a weather cushion:) It's been in my head for ages and to see it come to life is just fab.
I'm chuffed too how the pink cushions turned out as they were a bit of a faux pas in the fulling stakes. They were the lovely stripey pink woven stuff in my previous post and are a good example of what happens when you put too many things into a washing machine to full it. Every day is a learning day and we all get there in the end.
The tea cosy is quite cute too and would look great in my shiny painted kitchen, but need to try and sell these things.
So, the next projects are some li'l pumpkins for Hallowe'en, and then must get some scarves and bags going on the looms.
I've got an inkle loom recently too and keep looking at it but really no idea what to do on it yet. It's getting scary how much stuff I have now. Thank god for the understanding husband:)

cycling and too many projects

finally coming out of what hasn't been the best few weeks things are happily looki<img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; It's warm! It's sunny! And I'm running out of suncream that isn't like putting paint on. Can't complain though as it is great this weather and it's doing my garden lots of good.
The sun is also inspiring me to get on with things and sort out my etsy shop and actually get on with this whole promotion thing.
I've also managed to get round to warping up my loom again. This time it's going to be 2 pink cushions that'll have something embellished on them. What that something is is anyone's guess but we'll have to see when I get to that stage. I need to figure out my cushion making with the loom as have grand ideas for the future, which I'll let you know about in good time.
Small child has now finished nursery for the summer. Not panicking yet but don't think I've quite realised how little I'm likely to get done.
I'm in the middle of my shop sitting stints. Last weekend it was for McHattie which I always enjoy sitting for as it's a lovely light studio and I get to ogle Cascade and Colinette yarns. Also means I'm going to have to find some money to buy some now. This Saturday I'm shop sitting for Old Maiden Aunt Yarns which my bank account is already starting to get scared at the prospect of me in there for a few hours.
I really need to keep remembering too that I've got my next craft fair on Saturday 4th July, and need to make sure I've got stuff sorted for that.
Busy as usual:)

and there was ravelry day

Doh! forgot all about going to UK Ravelry day last weekend. Another fab day of oggling wool and stuff. Shame about the rain, but managed to keep my newly acquired goodies dry. Got some bargains at the British Wool stand (I wasn't going to buy wool, honest) and as there wasn't any weaving stuff, had to buy some Knit Picks Harmony needles. And then a bag of roving had to be bought, just waiting for a drop spindle to come and play with it.
This did get me motivated to finally sort out my stash and the inherited gran stash. Can't bear to get rid of anymore cones, as I'm sure I'm going to find a use for it, honest. Did clear out some of the random balls though. So how does it look like I've got more than I started with. I think things are secretly mating in there.
The gran stash does need severe busting still so think will try and use up lots for Stitches on the Bridge project, and there's always the loom to gobble up some more too.

weaving, sheep, wool, yay!

quite a bit has happened since my last post. to begin with i did my first craft fair at troon. I sold 1 brooch and that was it, but on the plus side I've got stock built up so always handy. Need to sell more. I had to wait over 2 weeks before I could play with it as I had to finish a pair of kilt socks for my brother for his wedding (just managed it with 24 hours to go, really need to get my time management sorted). Plus we were away on holiday.
Finally got it up and warped and made a scarf using my one skein, so far, of sock yarn from Old Maiden Aunt. So chuffed how it turned out and just wished it were a bit colder so could wear it more.
In the 2 week torment of not getting the loom sorted, I did get to Wonder Wool in Wales. I loved it and it was great seeing the variety of yarn stuff out there. I went a bit mad at UK Alpaca stall, but fairly restrained, and mentally logged what I would love to get when that lottery win comes through.
I've had a bit of knitting block and been trying to think of doing some stuff for me. Eventually decided to try and make a tank top from a pattern, first time for a while I've been doing pattern stuff.
But the creative juices are starting to come back now I've got the loom and it's sunny so feeling happier with the world.
Fave thing so far has been a wee sheep that I made for my mum's birthday.
I've now decided to leave all naming of objects to my son as he came up with runaway sheep for this gorgeous thing. It did then runaway across the garden, but that was because the springer spaniel stole it. Sheep was rescued and is now off to live a happy life. I feel a flock of them in various colours will be coming along soon.

Finally getting there

Well, I've finally gotten round to getting stuff I've finished recently onto Etsy and up-date my own site.
I do like how my little chicks turned out. Happy and Bit Grumpy chick definitely do seem to have a little life of their own and keep going about saying "meep" all the time.
Really happy I got another big blanket done. Can't believe how much yarn the big crochet and knitting needles take up, definitely can only afford to do those to sell. It is lovely how it turned out though, and it is a lovely soft blanket, must make money so can afford to keep one for me.
So the big question is now what to do next.
I feel an urge to get on with some ipod covers and try to do some totes/bags for felting.
Although, the lovely skein of yarn I got recently from Old Maiden Aunt keeps calling to be turned into a scarf or something, need to try and leave it as something to do when we go on holiday.

It's snowing

Hello. Well I thought I might as well try and start doing this blog thing and see what happens.
I'll try and keep up with posting knitting/crocheting stuff here and possibly what's been going on with life in general.
Managed to get not 1 but 2 ipod covers crocheted last night. Had to be done as Rob and I have new phones and they needed to be kept warm in this weather.
Next project is my first pair of socks as practice for doing 2 pairs of kilt socks by the end of april. No rush then.
